In 1860 Louis-Ulysse Chopard first founded his own watchmaking company in the small farming village of Sonvilier, on the road from St. Imier to La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Since then, the name of Chopard has earned an outstanding reputation for gold pocket watches, from extra flat to highly complicated. In the company's history of more than 130 years much has happened which is worth resurrecting.
In the heights of the Jura the wind blows more bleakly than elsewhere in Switzerland. The summer is short and in the winter, when icy storms pack the snow onto the ground, one can sense how lonely life must have been for the people who lived here when the region was still cut off from the outside world for most of the year.
Even then - barely 200 years ago - there was no trace of rural coarseness in the Swiss Jura. ''The people are civilized and well-mannered and everywhere can be seen diligence, activity and prosperity'', the Weimar Privy Councillor von Goethe was surprised to note in 1779 when, during his journey through Switzerland, he travelled through this tract of land which for centuries was so inhospitable.
